Blanca Doreste Martin
‘Scribe’ I for English 6030
Dr. Ellen Pratt
August 11, 2008
The Love Song of English Majors
Today’s class is an introduction
Many women are there
Thanks to the absence of men
Us, girls don’t have to worry about what to wear
We choose a class scribe,
Surprise! It is me
Next week there will be a new one
I wonder who it will be
Dr. Pratt introduces herself
And the students pay attention
We are to write about our names
And we all know what is the intention
The intention is to write
As much as we possibly can
Then we sit in the author’s seat
And read what we have at hand
Funny stories come alive
About the origin of people’s names
We all laugh at the different anecdotes
It all seems like a really fun game
Sandra is a health insurance
Gerardo is a brave spear
Wilmarie is a rebellious one
But aren’t we all dear?
Lidsay’s name is difficult to pronounce
Mariel comes from Cuban revolution
Jessica is the Puerto Rican ‘gringa’
And all these crazies are part of a prestigious institution
We discuss the syllabus
And get a little scared
There is plenty of work to be done
To flunk we do not dare
We have to create a blog
In order to write and respond
It’s a bit overwhelming
But I’m sure it will be bunches of fun!
I hope you liked my poem
I hope you liked my tune
Hope you have a nice weekend
And I will see you all very soon!

Blanca your poem was funny and great! You said all of the important highlights of the class and made it rhyme. I really liked your tone, keep up the creativity!

I liked Blanca’s way of summarizing the class in this funny poem. I think the name’s activity served as an ice-breaker and we got to learn a little bit more about ourselves as a class.

Oh, this was very good! Blanca summarized everything perfectly, and with rhyme, to boot. Guess all other scribes are going to have to step it up on the originality scale. And I agree with Jeniffer, that the whole name-game served as a terrific ice-breaker. See you at the next class!

Good job Blanca! I loved the poem. I will like to thank you for writing about me. The only thing that I have to correct is that my name is Marien and you wrote Mariel, it’s ok that happens all the time, my name is different. The important thing is that this activity gave us the opportunity to be interested in knowing each other more.

As I was reading your poem, I started to understand what had really taken place in the class that night. You created such a cool balance between the comic narratives of our names and the stress that is always felt at the beginning of each class and each new semester. It was a perfect example of the role of the scribe in the class. I loved it!

Blanca I really liked your poem I think it was a good way to summarized what happened in class and it was very creative and original. I think that it is a good example for others to follow. Also you were the first and brave one to do this task and you did a grat job.

I actually wasn’t in class that first day, but as I read the poem, I did get a summary of what happened in the classroom. She did a great description of what was happening in the class, not only formally, but informally. I am still lost on the name things, but it was a very visual poem. I agree with Banca when she says that the discussion of the syllabus is overwhelming. In every class I take, when the teacher discusses the syllabus I repeat over and over to myself that all of this work is to be done in one semester and that the professor will be there to help us understand what we have to do, because all that information is very sticking. One semester on one class, after discussing the syllabus, I left the classroom crying, so as you can see syllabus can be a little threatening. The professors face and attitude helps a lot on calming our first impression of the syllabus.

I liked the idea of writing a scribe as a poem. I tend to do the same thing and when I read your poem I flt right at home, Very good job.
