The Scribe of the Day
By Lidsay Centeno

I’m sorry Blanca I mean to say
for copying your poetic ways.
But your technique was fun and true
that I had to try writing a poem too.

So now with no further a do
here is the scribe I have written for you.
I will explain without delay
all the things we did that day.

The class began with a quiz
so Nora and Rob got down to biz.
The competition got down to size
when they announced there would be a prize.

Many questions were answered that day
but only one winner was truly at play
and that was Francheska who Nora and Rob honored
by giving her the well deserved and amazing dollar.

And just when we were having so much fun
we soon realized that their scribe was done.
Back to the class we had to go
to keep on with our educational flow.

The great debate of this week
was where we were going to meet
and since no one knew what to say
we are meeting in this classroom today.

“Winds of Change” we had discussed
and opinions rose without any fuss.
Some students from this reading had stated
that teaching techniques are not gold plated.

If teaching writing was what you aspired
techniques and abilities you must acquire.
You have to decline teaching the same old thing
and instead teaching students materials with a swing.

If some topics you do not know much
that shouldn’t be a topic you should touch.
You must be a teacher that truly cares
and not teach things of which you are not aware.

The truth and reality of the matter is
that a PhD does not make you a wiz.
This assumption has held teaching and learning back
by assuming that all degrees are white and black.

Coon had more or less the same idea
that not much change has been made real.
He states that some teachers wont make a change
because changing tradition is just purely strange.

I think that we all agreed
that Berlin was a drag to read.
And before we could say anything more
it was time to walk out the door.

Before our ritualistic class closing
we numbered traits writers should be owning.
They should have a point and perfect writing
and know their message shouldn’t be hiding.

All and all that’s all we revised
I hope you all enjoyed my scribe.

I have e-mailed everyone with the information for our class on Friday. If you did not receive the information please e-mail me or respond here. I am still inviting the idea of another possible location. If you think of something please respond here.

The quiz was too big to put here so I am giving it to you as a pdf that you can download, but you can make the comments here. scribe-quiz

For one of your short writings for the class you may want to write a type of literacy narrative or autobiography that sums who you are as a reader and writer and how you became what you are. You may want to think back on your earliest recollections with print and reading and writing. You could come up with a sort of time line for your literacy in English and Spanish, or your bi-lingual literacy development. You may have positive and negative stories about learning to read and write with certain people, be they family, teachers or friends that helped to shape you as who you you are as a writer and reader. This is a personal essay and will require you to seriously reflect upon who you have become as a writer. I have tried to find a few readings that might serve as models for this type of work and came up with this link to Orwell,s Why I write

Enjoy the assignment and have fun with it!

‘Scribe’ I for English 6030
Dr. Ellen Pratt
August 11, 2008

The Love Song of English Majors
Today’s class is an introduction
Many women are there
Thanks to the absence of men
Us, girls don’t have to worry about what to wear

We choose a class scribe,
Surprise! It is me
Next week there will be a new one
I wonder who it will be

Dr. Pratt introduces herself
And the students pay attention
We are to write about our names
And we all know what is the intention

The intention is to write
As much as we possibly can
Then we sit in the author’s seat
And read what we have at hand

Funny stories come alive
About the origin of people’s names
We all laugh at the different anecdotes
It all seems like a really fun game

Sandra is a health insurance
Gerardo is a brave spear
Wilmarie is a rebellious one
But aren’t we all dear?

Lidsay’s name is difficult to pronounce
Mariel comes from Cuban revolution
Jessica is the Puerto Rican ‘gringa’
And all these crazies are part of a prestigious institution

We discuss the syllabus
And get a little scared
There is plenty of work to be done
To flunk we do not dare

We have to create a blog
In order to write and respond
It’s a bit overwhelming
But I’m sure it will be bunches of fun!

I hope you liked my poem
I hope you liked my tune
Hope you have a nice weekend
And I will see you all very soon!

Just to let you all know that the readings are here only until the books come in. The readings  for your second class will be taken off the page this week.

When we think about writing and how we learn to write, one of the groups that has been most helpful in our understanding of these issues is NCTE, the National Council of Teachers of English. You might want to consider belonging to this group.Tthey have made writing a priority and have written an important piece that gives us important information about writing. Check out their Beliefs about Writing, it is the basis for this course. We will discuss this document as part of the course.

We are always working away at our computers without considering what effect the Internet has on our brains. here is an interesting article from The Atlantic that tells us a lot about how we read and write and it offers us some history on writing. Do you agree with the article or not?

Here we are! Another school year begins. Welcome to your 6030 course. I am excited about teaching this course and I hope that you will collaborate with me on making the course a success. I also hope that you all will share you thoughts and comments here on the blog. I will be adding a page where we can respond to each of the class sessions. Someone from the course will function as scribe for each Monday night course and the writing will be published on the blog. I know that a number of you will be teaching writing courses this semester so you are welcome to add any new ideas, websites, new understandings to the blog also.
